Grand Rapids, Michigan has been a hidden gem for many years but recent press has resulted in an influx of people gravitating, so much so that many major publications are starting to notice!

Vogue’s 2018 list of the best cities to buy homes in America has Grand Rapids featured as number one. This number one listing isn’t the first time that a major publication has paid attention to this beautiful city. In the past, it’s also gotten recognition with placing high on national lists. It was listed as the top 19th place to live in the United States by U.S. News last year, and it’s also been number one on Forbes’ charts for the best metro area to raise a family. These accolades are only supporting what people from the area already know: Grand Rapids is the place to be.

What Makes Grand Rapids So Appealing?

There are several factors that all work together to make this the place to be even when coping with the winters.

Price Point

One of the first factors that make this area attractive is the price point. Housing costs are below the national average making it a very affordable city. You can often get more house for your dollar in this area than in comparable markets. Plus, the cost of living is lower compared to similar areas making it very reasonable.

Commute Times and Job Market

Location, location, location is another big seller for this area. The commute for most individuals that have to drive to work is lower than the national average. The average commute is about 21 minutes which saves commuters about four minutes. Another high point for this area is that it has a thriving job market with employment opportunities waiting for those that decide to relocate to the city.

Community

Community feel is another big attraction. Although Grand Rapids is the second largest urban area in the state, it still gives off that feeling of a small-town community thanks to Midwest friendliness. The city is very inclusive with a healthy LGBT community and fine arts community while still being very family-friendly. Families love the area for these reasons in addition to the fact that their school system is in the top third of schools in the United States.

Cultural Center

While you can enjoy the beach nearby and other significant natural features, there are plenty of chances to experience the culture of the city. There are two art museums, the Grand Rapids Art Museum and Urban Institute for Contemporary Art. Frank Lloyd Wright followers can visit his fully restored Prairie House, Meyer May House for free. Foodies will love the farm-to-table experience available at several restaurants in the areas. Plus, there’s a vibrant microbrewery community waiting for you to experience some of the best brews around.
