Grand Rapids Area Housing Shortage?

Grand Rapids Michigan Relocation Tips

Grand Rapids continues to present itself not only as one of the most vibrant communities in the state of Michigan to live in but in the entire country. With an ever-expanding network of hospitals as well as smaller startups and regional companies (like Meijer) headquartered here, there's nothing but excitement going on. It combines a larger city environment with small-town charm for the perfect combination of activities, exceptional schools, and world-class entertainment. For years, only residents on the west side of the state knew of Grand Rapids and everything it had to offer. Now, as it pushes up more and more "top places to live" lists, newcomers from far and wide are deciding to settle down in Grand Rapids. While this is fantastic news for the city, it also means there may be a Grand Rapids area housing shortage in the near future.

Is a Housing Shortage Possible?

Like other Midwestern cities, Grand Rapids is a centralized city supported by suburbs. However, unlike other regional cities, it isn't bulldozing beautiful, historical architecture left and right in order to make room for mixed-use apartment condos and storefronts. The beauty of downtown Grand Rapids is the collection of historical and newer buildings. It's not pushing over it's past to make way for the flavor of the month condos. That's not needed in Grand Rapids.

With housing limited in downtown, young professionals are buying up homes in local communities with short commutes to work, entertainment and the Grand Rapids nightlife that continues on through the colder winter months (when you live in Michigan, you embrace the snow and cold, it just makes the spring and summer that much sweeter).

In recent years there has been an increased influx of professionals moving into the Grand Rapids metro area from not just the rest of the state but from all corners of the globe. As a leader in healthcare and hospitality, professionals in these industries have flocked to the city. During the economic downturn, properties were bought quickly around Grand Rapids. This was especially the case because Grand Rapids was not hit as hard as the east side of the state (such as Detroit metro). In fact, while the state of Michigan saw a reduction in population, Grand Rapids was and continues to be, one of the fastest growing communities in the state.

More Professionals Moving In
